Why is it that you are more likely to suffer an injury recurrence after sustaining an injury – apart from the obvious of course?

Rest is essential after an acute sporting injury, however, it is often poorly understood. Relative rest is a better description as we want to reduce the loss of tissue capacity and tolerance that comes with complete rest. So in other words, if you only rest to recover after an injury, when you return back to your activity (training), you can exceed your new lowered capacity (tolerance) levels and suffer an injury recurrence or even another injury.
Maintaining and building capacity (tolerance) whilst still recovering from injury is crucial. This does not mean we program someone who has sustained a large hamstring or calf strain to run straight away, furthering the injury, but we program other ways to maintain and build capacity. Whilst rehabilitating the injured area you must not neglect the neighbouring areas and the rest of your body systems.
Consulting with a health care practitioner that understands the injury and the sport or activity demands that you are returning to is paramount.
